High-Fructose Corn Syrup (Glucose-Fructose in Canada). Potential side effects are obesity, insulin resistance, increased belly fat and heart disease.
Trans Fats (labeled as shortening, partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated, mono-and diglycerides, or DATEM). Potential side effects are heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
Artificial Flavors a blanket term referring to over 100 possible chemical additives. Potential side effects are allergic and behavioral reactions.
Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) potential side-effects are chest pain, heart palpitations, headaches, stimulates taste buds causing you to eat more.
Artificial colors their potential side effects are allergies, sinus congestion, hyperactivity in children, worsen symptoms of ADD and ADHD.
Artificial Sweeteners – Aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet). Primarily affects the nervous system. Potential side-effects are headaches, dizziness, memory loss and convulsions. Sucralose (Splenda) more research is needed to determine its safety. Acesulfame Potassium (Ace-K) research indicates it may cause cancer. Neotame needs more studies to confirm its safety. Saccharin (Sweet’N’ Low) has proven to cause cancer in animals. Suspected human carcinogen.
Preservatives potential side-effects are: TBHQ tinnitus, nausea, vomiting. Polysorbates (60, 65 & 80) infertility, immunosuppressant and anaphylaxis. BHT/BHA liver and kidney problems. BHA is a possible carcinogen. Nitrates or Nitrites allergic reactions and potential carcinogen. Potassium Sorbate allergic reactions, nausea, diarrhea and DNA damage. Sodium Benzoate allergic reactions and carcinogenic. Sulfites allergic reactions especially for asthmatics.
